Replace Coal with Coconuts

Writer: Veronica SparkVeronica Spark

You can’t replace coal with coconuts. But… With unreliable electricity, many rely on charcoal and wood as an energy alternative. But these fuel sources cause burns and injuries, produce toxic smokes, and can  lead to respiratory disease and death. And countries like Ghana have lost a third of their forests to the production of these cheap fuel sources.

Meanwhile, coconut waste was being discarded in the streets and thrown into landfills, polluting the city and producing massive CO2 emissions.

So why not turn coconut waste into a charcoal alternative? Well, that’s exactly what Sully Amin decided to try. And not only did these coconut briquettes burn hotter and cleaner; they did not deplete forests, did utilized waste, reduced CO2 emission, and offered a clean, affordable energy source. So... you can.
