What is a vocation?

Vocation is work you do for its own sake. You would do it even if you didn't get paid. Your work has an effect on the greater good, and an impact beyond yourself. It uses your unique gift. And it feels like it is the thing you were meant to do.

Not all "work" is created equal

JOB

survival

A job gives you a paycheck. You don't use your talents on a daily basis. You just go through the motions, and exchange your time for money. You live for the weekends, and you get little satisfaction from your days outside of the paycheck.

Career

success

A career is focused on salary, status, and success. It affords you a steady check and a fine lifestyle. But something is missing. You are making money, but you're not making a difference. You feel like there has to be more to life.

Vocation

significance

A vocation is your mission in life. It is the reason you were put on this planet. It is the place where you'll find personal fulfillment, because you are using your gifts and improving the world.

You need to find Your sweet spot

Your sweet spot is that little space where your personality, talents, and experiences intersect. It's your calling, your vocation, your mission in life. It's the only place you'll ever feel like you are exactly where you should be, and you're doing what you were put on the planet to do.

take inventory of your greatest assets

You are your greatest asset. And what makes you different makes you valuable. The first step to doing your best work is to take inventory of the tools you've been given. And the only way to be truly satisfied is when what you do aligned with who you are.
